Silver Lining, Manchester Art Gallery
Manchester Jewellers Network’s latest exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery is entitled ‘Silver Lining’ and will be open from the 23rd of September to the 23rd of January. The ‘silver lining’ is a metaphor for optimism in the common English-language idiom. ‘Every cloud has a silver lining’. The origin of the phrase is traced to John Milton’s “Comus” (1634) with the lines;
“Was I deceiv’d, or did a sable cloud
Turn forth her silver lining on the night?”
Seventeen members of the group have designed new ranges inspired by this brief. Working in a variety of materials including precious metal, glass and semi-precious stones, the exhibition showcases an eclectic mix of different jewellery related crafts.
